Sunday March 29th, 2009

Despite a advantage in possession throughout most of the game, Wolfpac never gained enough momentum to find a lead in Sunday's Spring opener and was denied points as the team's last attempt on goal clanks off the far post.

After four months off Wolfpac found itself back on the field at sunny Grasslawn park in Redmond. Joining the team were newcomers Lee Grambush, Josh McGaffey, Dermott Owens and Drew Woodruff.

Back-and-forth play was the theme of this game as both teams opened up early and attacked goal often. Foster Kids had the best chances early and put themselves on the score sheet first, in the 20th minute. Wolfpac would answer just before the half when a ball deep in the Foster Kids zone popped out to Woodruff at the edge of the box - his quick shot back at goal found net and kept the game level heading into the half.

Both teams continued where they left off putting lots of pressure on the defenses. Foster Kids again took the early advantage scoring first in the second half.

Wolfpac was quick to answer - stringing together passes through the middle before finding Smith out wide, on the left side of the Kids penalty area. Smith shielded his defender as he cut in towards goal and was tripped up from behind a few steps inside the box, earning a PK. His shot went slightly left of center while the Kids goalkeeper guessed opposite.

Equal again, both teams fought for possession and the go-ahead goal. Foster Kids found that goal, and another to extend their lead to 4-2 with time winding down.

Exhausted, but not willing to give up Wolfpac pulled within one when Woodruff sent a brilliant ball out of the defense to Owens. Owens controlled the ball off the bounce and shrugged off his defender before faking the Kids goalkeeper right, dribbling left and finding net.

Wolfpac continued to pressure and was almost rewarded when Owens received the ball on the attacking right side of the Kids penalty box. He skipped along the edge of the box before firing off a lefty that hit the far post.

Unable to find a third and final equalizer Wolfpac was welcomed back to GSSL with it's second straight loss after going undefeated in it's prior 20 matches.

Wolfpac goes back in time next week when it faces FC Spare Tire after nearly four years without a match played between the two clubs. The match is scheduled for 2 PM on April 5th at Shorecrest high school in Shoreline.
